Castle Platamon
The castle of Platamon is a fortress-town
of the middle Byzantine period (10th century
A.D.). It lies at the south-east foot of
mount Olympos, at a strategic position which
controls the route leading from Macedonia to
Thessaly and South Greece. Excavations
conducted in 1995 brought to light the
traces of a Hellenistic fortification, dated
to the 4th century B.C. This confirms the
suggestion that the site of the castle was
occupied by the ancient city of Herakleion,
"the first city of Macedonia..." after the
Tempe valley, according to an ancient
literary source dated to 360 B.C. Habitation
on the site continued until the 4th century
A.D. The Byzantine wall was restored by the
Franks after 1204 and again by the
Byzantines in the 14th century.
Dion Pierias
The excavation of the area commenced in
1928 and is continued at present by the
University of Thessaloniki. It has brought
to light a fortified city, surrounded by
cult areas, that was inhabitated
continuously from the Classical period to
Early Christian times. Buildings of various
periods have been discovered in a series of
different levels. Private residences, public
buildings, shops, and a large number of
workshops are erected in building blocks
defined by the streets. On the south edge of
the ancient city are the public baths (thermae),
an imposing complex covering an area of over
4,000 square metres and dating from about
A.D. 200. In the east sector has been
discovered the villa of Dionysos, which
takes its name from the large mosaic
depicting the god that covers the floor of
the banqueting room.
Olympous the land of Gods
One of the most famous mountains in the
world, Olympus was home of the twelve Greek
Gods as well as that of numerous little
goddesses nymphes , fairies and elves of our
mythology. At its slopes lived the Muses
with their father Apollo , while at it’s
feet the mythical , melody maker , Orpheus
was born and finally beheaded .Numerous
invades tried to concur Olympus, but the
mountain remained free in its long history,
whilst during the 2hd world war, it became
the shelter of the freedom Fighters. Olympus
is a phenomenon of vegitation with lots of

flowers. It is also famous for its herbs
